Four number cards are arranged from left to right:
2 · 4 · 6 · 8
But not in that order.
WHAT’S THE ORDER?
Clues
- 8 is immediately to the right of 2
- 4 is somewhere to the left of 2
- 6 is not on either end
Answer
4 — 6 — 2 — 8
Why it works
Treating 2 and 8 as a fixed block leaves only one placement compatible with the other clues.
- Because 8 is immediately to the right of 2, the pair must appear as the block 2 — 8.
- The block cannot occupy the first two positions because 4 must be somewhere to the left of 2.
- The block cannot occupy the middle two positions. That would force 4 into the first position and 6 into the last position, but 6 cannot be on an end.
- Therefore 2 — 8 must occupy the third and fourth positions.
- Of the two remaining positions, 6 cannot be on the left end, so 6 is second and 4 is first. The order is 4 — 6 — 2 — 8.
