Four number cards are arranged from left to right:
1 · 3 · 5 · 7
But not in that order.
WHAT’S THE ORDER?
Clues
- 1 is immediately to the right of 5
- 3 is somewhere to the right of 7
- 7 is not on either end
Answer
5 — 1 — 7 — 3
Why it works
The fixed 5 — 1 pair can only occupy the first two positions; 7 and 3 then fill the remaining positions in order.
- Because 1 is immediately to the right of 5, treat 5 — 1 as a single adjacent block.
- The block cannot occupy positions two and three, because that would leave 7 on an end. It cannot occupy positions three and four for the same reason.
- So 5 — 1 must occupy the first two positions.
- The remaining cards are 7 and 3. Since 3 must be to the right of 7, they take the final positions as 7 — 3.
- The full order is 5 — 1 — 7 — 3.
